No hope for humanity

There are days where I wake up mopey. Usually by the end of these days, I feel not only that there is no hope for humankind, but I feel contempt for them.  This only snowballs over time.

And then something, or someone, unexpectedly does something, and it completely snaps me out of it, and shows me that there is yet hope, even if it’s only the faintest glimmer.

Today I had the chance and the gift to convince someone that they mattered, that they were important, and that they had power over their lives. What surprised me is that it really did click with them, it really affected them.  When someone intelligent realizes that they matter, that they have power, it makes me ecstatic.  It puts a smile on my face in a way that nothing else can, because the experience is unique.  It’s almost like watching a child be born and grow.

I think at the bottom of it, that’s the big secret of life: That you matter. No matter what terrible things you’ve seen or experienced, no matter the horrors inflicted on you, you matter. You have power over your life. It does not require years of training or a special method to acquire it, you must simply choose to open your hand and grasp it.  It is within your reach.
